Ask Amy: Man wants to be “fun dad” while mom does the dirty work — December 29, 2016

Ask Amy: Man wants to be “fun dad” while mom does the dirty work

Dear Amy: When my husband and I married about 10 years ago, we were both ambivalent about having children.

My husband is a kind, generous man. I’ve gradually come around to wanting kids. I’m 40 now, so it’s approaching “now or never” time for me.

My husband says he’s willing to have babies, if that’s what I really want. But here’s the kicker; he’s willing to do things like teach the kid to throw a football or take them to Disneyland, but says he won’t do things like wake up in the middle of the night to feed a baby, change diapers, do extra laundry, etc.

So, basically, I’d be doing all the dirty work, while he would just get to swoop in and have fun with the kid when it suits him.

I picture myself being exhausted and frustrated with this scenario, but it’s the only one in which I save my marriage and also have children. I already feel resentful of him being “the good guy” in a child’s eyes, while I’m the boring nag.

Should I go ahead with a baby and hope he’ll get on board once we’re in the thick of it, or should I accept that this is a recipe for disaster?

Seen: Denver Debutante Ball at the Brown Palace —

Seen: Denver Debutante Ball at the Brown Palace

By Joanne Davidson, Special to The Denver Post

Although it’s not designed as such, the Denver Debutante Ball provides one of the most beautiful ways to appreciate Colorado history.

Many of the young ladies who are presented at this holiday gala held at the Brown Palace Hotel are from families whose forbears settled in Colorado at the turn of the century — or before — and played key roles in developing the state’s commerce, government and industry sectors. Thus, it is both interesting and educational to see how they are following, for example, a great-grandparent’s footsteps or branching out in directions that will bring new life to underserved communities.

Of the 19 college freshmen who were presented at the 61st Denver Debutante Ball, Morgan Alexander (Indiana University); Maryanna DeLine (the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business) and Madeline Warren (Southern Methodist University) are 6th-generation Coloradans. Nicole Honnen (Baylor University); Elise Korneffel (University of Oregon) and Remington Ruyle (CU-Boulder) are from families whose roots were established here five generations ago.
DeLine’s grandmother, Mary Kay Braun DeLine, was presented at the first Denver Debutante Ball, held in 1956.
Ariana Kemp (Claremont McKenna College) had great-great-grandparents who arrived in Colorado in the early 1900s. Marjorie Nicholson’s great-grandfather was Denver’s mayor from 1955 to 1959 and Abigail Padgett’s great-grandfather established the Anschutz Family Foundation. Her grandmother, Sue Anschutz Rodgers, was Citizen of the West in 2006 and was the first woman to hold that title.

Other debutantes were:

Ingrid Backes was captain of East High School’s swim team before going on to major in nutrition at Colorado State University; Martha Baker, a member of Colorado Academy’s A-Team for Mock Trial, is midway through her freshman year at Claremont McKenna College. Madeline Bragg, who graduated with awards in physics and photography from Kent Denver School , is majoring in studio arts …read more

This is what a day in the life of a JP Morgan intern is like —

This is what a day in the life of a JP Morgan intern is like

JPM intern

By and large, any student who has their sights on working at a major bank must complete a summer internship first. They are an opportunity for students to test out the profession, and for the firm to scout for its future employees.

In 2015, Business Insider had the opportunity to follow Sophie, a University of Cambridge economics student, as she went through a day of her 10-week summer analyst internship.

She was one of hundreds of interns who work at the investment bank every summer, and who follow essentially the same programme, whether they’re in London, Hong Kong or New York.

If previous years are anything to go by, a majority of the summer intake will be offered positions at JP Morgan for when they finish studying — becoming high-flying and highly-paid investment bankers in the process.

This is how Sophie’s day went.

This post is based on a previous article by Mike Bird.

It was an early start. Sophie had to be at her desk for 6:30 a.m, in London’s Canary Wharf.

JP Morgan’s London headquarters is this 31-storey tower on Bank Street. The bank bought the tower in 2010 — it had previously belonged to Lehman Brothers.

Sophie worked in global equity sales. She was there for 10 weeks in the summer of 2015, having completed other internship periods at the bank already. The desk essentially sells shares from around the world to largely UK-based clients.

MacIntyre’s 3 thoughts: Eddie soars, 2nd PP roars, and D was better than you think —

MacIntyre’s 3 thoughts: Eddie soars, 2nd PP roars, and D was better than you think

Three not-so-deep initial thoughts from Iain MacIntyre on the Canucks’ 2-1 win against the Kings

EDDIE THE EAGLE CAN STILL SOAR

When you have been as poor as the Canucks this season, it’s hard to think that one player not named Sidney Crosby or Connor McDavid could have materially changed their standing with his presence in the lineup. And no one should ever confuse Alex Edler’s impact with Crosby’s or McDavid’s.

But we finally saw what the Canucks were missing the last 13 games when Edler returned from injury, made a statement-hit on Dustin Brown in the game’s opening shift, and helped lead Vancouver to a 2-1 win over the LA Kings.

After goalie Ryan Miller, Edler was probably the best Canuck. In a game when Vancouver was outshot 30-11 at even strength, Edler was the only Canuck skater to make it to 50 per cent in shot-attempts when he was he was on the ice (12-12). Edler finished with 20:43 of ice time – and not a second of it on the power play. And in the final minute, with his team clinging to a 2-1 lead, Canuck coach Willie Desjardins was able to put Edler and Chris Tanev on the ice together for the first time since Nov. 2.

We know a lot of fans are desperate to trade Edler. We also know that the 30-year-old Swede is the most likely of all Canucks to flex his no-trade clause to stay. And we know he’s still a pretty darn good defenceman in the NHL – even if he plays a lot of nights at 70-something per cent instead of in the 90s.

Vancouver is 5-8-1 this season without him.

BETTER D – HONESTLY

When you are outshot 37-20 like the Canucks were, the fancy stats are not going to favour you. And, certainly, the …read more

26 Showbiz Fails From 2016 That We’re Still Cringing At Now —

26 Showbiz Fails From 2016 That We’re Still Cringing At Now

Whether it’s falling over, making gaffes on social media, wardrobe malfunctions or misjudged ancedotes, celebrities are far from perfect – something we learned many, many times in 2016.

Here are just 26 of such showbiz fails we’re still cringing at, even months after they happened…

1. Chris Evans’ ‘Top Gear’ reboot

Chris Evans made a number of bold claims when he took over the reins of ‘Top Gear’ – most notably that he’d be disappointed if the rebooted version failed to pull in at least five million viewers

Cut to a few weeks later, and the show’s audience was dwindling week-on-week, while critics absolutely savaged the show. Chris later stepping down as the main host after just one series.

2. BBC newsreader forgets she’s on the telly

Presenter Joanna Gosling was seen slumped in her chair scrolling through her mobile, as the camera cut to her in the newsroom live on the BBC News channel.

We’ve all been caught on our phone when we shouldn’t have been, right?

3. Ed Balls nearly drops his ‘Strictly’ partner, Katya Jones

There was much to enjoy about Ed Balls’ stint on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, but we watched this precarious moment, which saw him nearly drop partner Katya Jones as he tried to pull off a complicated lift, with our hands over our eyes.

4. Channel 4 buys ‘Great British Bake Off’

C4 bosses must have been feeling really smug when they nabbed the rights to air the nation’s biggest show from right under the BBC’s nose.

However, when three quarters of the on-screen team quit within a week of the announcement, they were left with just Paul Hollywood and a tent. What a waste of £75 million.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Faces Criminal Investigation For Fraud & Bribery —

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Faces Criminal Investigation For Fraud & Bribery

israel_pm1

Submitted by Lance Schuttler via TheMindUnleashed.com,

The Times of Israel is reporting that police are calling on Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to allow them to open a full criminal investigation against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Monday, December 26th, Israeli police announced that they are absolutely convinced that a criminal investigation will be opened in the next few days due to new documents that were recently received in a special inquiry that began about 9 months ago.

The offenses that Netanyahu allegedly will face will be bribery and aggravated-fraud. In June it was reported that police had recently started their secret investigation, with demand that no details be leaked to the media.

Attorney General Mandelblit also allegedly instructed employees in the state prosecutor’s office to investigate allegations that Netanyahu accepted 1 million euros (about $1.1 million) from accused French fraudster Arnaud Mimran in 2009.

Earlier in December, in an apparently unrelated case, there were calls for the Netanyahu to be investigated for his role in a Defense Ministry deal to purchase submarines from a German company that is partly owned by the Iranian government.

The affair overtook public debate in Israel last month, as accusations came about that the Israeli prime minister may have been financially swayed in the decision by his personal counsel David Shimron, who himself had ties with the submarines’ builder, ThyssenKrupp. The purchase was opposed by sectors of the defense establishment, including former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon.

A spokesman for Netanyahu defended the Prime Minister by telling The Times of Israel, “This is absolutely false. There was nothing and there will be nothing.”

What is most interesting about this news is the possible correlation with the U.S. decision to abstain from the vote in the United Nations that aims to stop Israeli construction on occupied Palestinian territory. While …read more

One chart explains all the possible outcomes from next year’s French presidential election —

One chart explains all the possible outcomes from next year’s French presidential election

We all know that 2016 has been a year of immense upheaval in Western politics, and that turmoil is set to continue in 2017.

Donald Trump will formally become the leader of the free world, the British government will trigger Article 50 and start the process of leaving the EU, and in France, there is a genuine possibility that the country could elect a far right, anti-Islamic president in Marine Le Pen.

With just under four months until the first round of the election, much remains unclear. We know that Le Pen will be the Front National’s candidate, and that Francois Fillon — who won a shock primary victory over rival Alain Juppe — will be the centre-right Republican candidate.

On the country’s left, the picture is less clear, as incumbent President Francois Hollande will not stand for a second term thanks to shockingly low approval ratings. Hollande’s Socialist Party has yet to choose a candidate, while former finance minister Emmanuel Macron has formed his own party, En Marche! and will stand on a left-leaning platform.

Fillon is the clear favourite to take over from Hollande, but Le Pen’s polling numbers are good and if 2017 follows the pattern of this year, she could easily spring a surprise.

In short, the outcome of the French election is incredibly uncertain. Barclays’ research arm has compiled a useful chart looking at all the possible scenarios that could stem from the election.

The chart assumes that Marine Le Pen will reach the second round of voting, and looks at the economic scenarios that could play out, as well as examining the political fallout of the election.
